Contemporary Passions VII

Harbour House in Kingsbridge is the venue for the seventh annual summer exhibition of work by members of the South Hams Arts Forum (SHAF). This year's vibrant collection, Contemporary Passions VII, includes painting, printmaking, glass, jewellery and ceramics from 14 members of this local artists' collective. The exhibition opens at the Kingsbridge gallery on Tuesday 21 July.

Christine Dack's interest lies in the rugged landscapes of the world, and this year she shows paintings inspired by the island of Gozo. Rosemary Moser brings elements of cathedral stained glass windows to her view of the South Hams landscape. Rosemary Bonney shows a new collection of mixed media abstracts and intimate views of the landscape, while Emma Cook and Maggie Smith both explore the landscape and coastline in printmaking and mixed media.

Rachel O'Connell, in contrast, looks to the inner landscape to inspire her large, abstract acrylic and mixed media paintings, and Sally Fisher is well known for her large, colourful paintings, pastels and mixed media works which reflect her joy of life.

Glass remains a strong feature of the contemporary arts scene, with Martine O'Malley's printed and sandblasted panels immortalising insects and seed heads, and Stella Wain-Heapy's brightly coloured and functional kiln-formed glass plates and vessels.

Inka Gabriel works with glass to produce tall, elegant lamps, often incorporating pebbles from the local shoreline, while jeweller Livvy Wotton also uses shells, and fragments of wood from fallen trees, alongside silver and gold in her contemporary charms, pendants, rings and bangles.

Joanna Martins takes the symbolism and mythology of animals as her inspiration. Well known for her cold cast bronzes of hares and other native animals, Joanna also develops inventive mixed media sculptures which draw on her extensive travels and research in Africa.

Ceramicist Caroline Mercer's most recent works focus on figures and faces, while Sharon Windebank is inspired by both the physical and the emotional aspects of the human form, and chooses timber with an appropriately sinuous grain for her carvings. She also constructs figures, taking the abstract sculptural qualities of wooden shipbuilding and architecture as a starting point.

Contemporary Passions VII showcases the work of fourteen members of the South Hams Arts Forum, and opens at Harbour House in Kingsbridge on Tuesday 21 July. Opening times will be 10 am - 5 pm daily, until the close of the show on Sunday 2 August. Admission is free.
