Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures - graphical layout Andy Warhol - Motion Pictures

This exhibition was organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in cooperation with The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh. It takes place under the auspices of The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art.

curator: Klaus Biesenbach (MoMA, New York)

30. 1. 2009 - 5. 4. 2009

Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures focuses on the artist's screen tests and non-narrative films from 1963-73. Within it we see sequences of his “most beautiful women” - screen tests featuring “Baby” Jane Holzer, Ivy Nicholson, Edie Sedgwick - and other works that showcase a parade of friends, actors, and models - Dennis Hopper, James Rosenquist, and Walter Burn to name just a few. This collection of tests is followed by the artist’s non-narrative films including Eat, Sleep, Kiss, and Blow Job. His films and videos capture the rich and raw texture of the fertile cultural milieu in which he lived and worked, and are crucial to the understanding of Warhol's work in other media. Prolific, mercurial, thought-provoking, charming, engaging, dynamic, confusing - just like the artist himself, Andy Warhol’s films explore the gamut of human emotion. The exhibition is a unique collection of twenty experimental silent, black and white films from the 1960s, which we can only see on a larger scale today thanks to digitalisation in large-screen projection, in the form of suspended tableaux. This exhibition enables the viewer to essentially view the films, most of which have never been displayed alongside their counterparts.

"THE USE OF THE WORD"

Ben - Blake - Boetti - Brus - J. Charlier - Corneli - Guerresi
Isgrò - Poirier - Rava - Rotella - Tatafiore - E. Vande Pitte

Twenty artists of different nationalities and different artistic trends are present in our booth. The red wire? The use of words in their works. Words, torn posters of the Rome of Cinecittà and the "dolce vita" form new images in the work of Mimmo Rotella, the words which the meeting of light and shadow, orchestrated by Fabrizio Corneli, gives life the words erased by the brush of Emilio Isgrò or embroidered with meticulous care by the Afghan embroiderers Alighiero Boetti for the words to the meaning obscure and mysterious Tobia Rava that develops through the language of the ancient Hebrew Kabbalah, or the Arabic words, loaded with symbolism, in The Virgin of the Book of Patrizia Guerresi.

But our stand that does not speak Italian. Ben leads the French visitor with words painted on a black background in an almost childish: do it! While the Belgian Jacques Charlier hidden entries in a landscape built using materials of burlesque, as even the title of his work: Art Is Fun, Life Is Serious Eric Vande Pitte, another Belgian, awakening visitor with fleeting images that speak of a magical writing and illustration. Then there is the choice of English Peter Blake overlay words and stereotypical images of British culture or the French couple, Anne & Patrick Poirier, tattoo of leaves found during excavation of their artistic, elegant fossils, but the worrying future world.

An eclectic exhibition shows how the writing continues to exert an indefinable attraction as the artists of the past as of today.

V22 PRESENTS is a series of projects produced in collaboration with artists, curators and art organisations in a variety of venues around London. V22 PRESENTS decided to explore the modes of thought and production in sculpture. To open a dialogue we put to five artists: Shahin Afrassiabi, Sam Basu, Simon Bill, Cedric Christie, Fergal Stapleton the following opening statement:

For the second project V22 PRESENTS have invited 5 artist curators to select works that engage with current developments and critiques in contemporary Sculpture.

The archaic term Sculpture can no longer contain the multiple directions and potentials that artists have attributed to it throughout its history.

Through bringing together diverse approaches and understanding from internationally renowned artists, groups and projects V22 PRESENTS: The Sculpture Show is an opportunity to engage with the diverse potentials that have come to encapsulate and exist within the definition Sculpture.
